Encinitas, CA

LaPalomaTheatre.com On February 11, 1928, La Paloma Theatre opened. May it never close. And may it always continue to screen Indie and Art House and World films, and host local concerts, and never change the marquee, ticket booth, or concession stand.

Tide Chart This planet breathes, baby.

Joseph Swit for President in 2032JosephSwit.com Joseph Swit is the only political pundit whose blog I read. He is also the only 12-year-old pundit I've come across. Talk about a fresh perspective. Joseph intends, in the year 2032, to be elected POTUS (President of the United States). He has my vote.

Patty KaPatty Kadel Illustration Yak-Yak copyrighteddel My dear friend Patty Kadel is responsible for this image of two yaks yaking, so pefectly titled, "Yak-Yak." Patty Kadel is the best Zydeco and Western or Eastern Swing-Dancing Worm-Ranching Kayaking Motorcycle-Riding Greeting Card-Illustrating and Fish-Gyotakuing woman I could possibly imagine.

House of Strauss There are all sorts of wonder-filled people on this planet. And they're busy doing good things. Of course, you won't meet them in the news media, as the news media feeds on and regurgitates fear and loathing. But you will meet these wonder-filled do-gooders in your community café, or sometimes, in a cyberspace community. I met Rachelle Straus at Mike Dooley's wonder-filled do-good things site, TUT.com. Rachelle and her family have their own wonder-filled do-gooder site, House of Strass, where they even published a slant of mine, Happy Accidents.

Del Mar Blue Print Great printers. Friendly people. I've been in the printing business since I was 19 and I won't let any other North County printer touch my jobs. Ask for Dave Preston. Tell him I referred you. If Dave can't do what you need done, he'll know someone who can, and he'll connect you to them. He's that kind of person. First-time customers get a 10% discount, too.

The Working Cowboy Band  Dave Preston is a great guy, a great printer (see the above link to Del Mar Blue Print) and a great bass player. Check out his band, dedicated to the preservation of original country music.

WORDsd.com This is the online resource for people like me who work with or play with words.

Green Flash Publishing This is the Encinitas gang of creative misfits who imagined up WORDsd.com and MyFlipSwitch.com and Voxels.com and WritersMonthly.com Hey, if it keeps them out of trouble and reduces their bar tabs, why not?

Seaside Center for Spiritual Living There mission is to be a spiritual nexus inspiring people to live their dreams. After coming of age in tight-lipped Yankee New England, I get a kick out of Southern Califonrnia's New Thought spritiualism. A decent house band, too.

KPRI Radio I sometimes wonder how it is that all I have ever desired I can find right here in my small, amazing, delight-filled town, Encinitas. Including a decent alternative rock radio station with a strong community invovlement and vibe.

Java Hut Cafe, Encinitas, CA

Surfdog's Java Hut One of the most important things that makes a town civilized is a funky, dog-friendly, bike-friendly, arts-friendly cafe with sassy staff and eccentric customers, free internet and a cool, eclectic mix of music. Ahhh… Java Hut.

E Street Café My Plan B Café for two reasons: It ain't funky enough. Internet access ain't free. (I believe the best hope for mankind to truly start rocking 'n rolling is for every person on this planet to have free and easy access to the collective consciousness, aka, the internet. When that happens, stand back for one mighty explosion of endless creativity and rush toward enlightenment.) Nontheless, E Street has a great staff, attracts eccentric folks (My people!), trés cool LIVE music almost every night of the week, decent coffee, and the best old school bulletin board in North County. (Which shows they DO know something about community-communication-connectivity, yes? So what's up with charging for internet access?)

What do you think of Publishers and Writers of San Diego?

Hey, I happen to be SPV Positive (Self-Publishing Virus). So, you can understand what it was like for me to walk into the December 2007 annual Publishers and Writers of San Diego party. I looked around, saw all these brilliant, eclectic, eccentric creative misfits talking about writing AND publishing. And I thought, “Whoa! I’m home!”

A quick word to my fellow SPV Positive friends: Don’t ever feel ashamed of your condition. After all, great writers like Mark Twain, Charles Dickens, and Jack London were SPV Positive. You’re in good company. And this is the absolute best time in history to be SPV Positive. With the miracle of the internet, and technological advances in graphics software and desktop publishing, and electronic distribution, from PDFs to eBook Readers to podcasts—an SPV Positive guy like me can look forward to many happy, healthy, productive years.

See you at the next meeting.
